Hawaiian cruise

We went on a Hawaiian cruise in April and loved it.  We were on the Legend of the Seas from Honolulu to Ensenada.  We have usually cruised to the Caribbean on 7 day cruises since that was all the time we could spare.  Now with children grown we have more choices so decided to try Hawaii.  We went to Honolulu for 5 days before our cruise.  It's a good idea since it gives you time to see the many sites on that island, and also time to recover from jet lag. If you fly out the day of your cruise, or even a day before, you won't get to see much of Oahu.  I can't tell you how much we liked Hawaii.  It is much prettier than the Caribbean, and the poverty isn't everywhere you look.  Also the people are really great to tourists.  They want us there, and know how to show it.  I also felt much safer there than in some Caribbean islands.  The helicopter tour on Maui was fabulous, I wasn't as impressed with the Helicopter circle of fire tour on Hawaii, it seemed rather short, and the lava flows were hard to see.  On Kauai the mountain safari adventure tour was great, but you never know what you'll see since fog rolls in quickly up there.  We saw Waimea Canyon from  the bus on the way to it, but there was nothing but rain and fog when we got to the main lookout.  The lookout out over the ocean was beautiful when we got to it, but as we were leaving it closed up with fog.  It's similar to Alaska in that timing is everything.  Kona highlights was a nice tour.  Not too long.  The adventure to Hana tour was too long for me.  The tour is set up so that there are bathroom stops enough for most people, but some were pretty primitive.  The scenery was fabulous, and you see a lot of the island.  I can't comment on many of the more strenuous tours, since we don't usually do those.  We leave the hiking and biking to younger people.  The down side to the Hawaiian cruise is that it is longer and more expensive than a Caribbean cruise.  We were gone 16 days, and I know that is a long time for some people to be away from jobs or young children.  Well, I hope this info is helpful to someone.  I can't wait to go to Hawaii again. Two weeks on Kauai next time.

Cruise reviews can be extremely helpful to new and experienced cruisers by giving the cruise vacation consumer's view of various RCCL ships and ports. If you've sailed aboard an RCCL ship, we hope you'll write and tell us about it by using our special form here.  Sincere thanks to those who take the time to do this so that others can have the benefit of shared information and experiences.
